Project status

Comprehensive geological and ecological studies were carried out in the entire area in the run-up to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS/EIA) for the Kaunertal power plant upgrade.

These exploratory activities comprised numerous natural history surveys and complex geological investigations as well as the construction of the Klasgarten exploratory tunnel above Gepatsch reservoir.

The Klasgarten exploratory tunnel, which is 732 metres long and has an excavation cross-section of 12 sq. metres, gives an insight into the geology of the area.

The construction of the Klasgarten exploratory tunnel and related exploratory measures were completed at the end of 2011.

TIWAG-Tiroler Wasserkraft AG submitted the Environmental Impact Statement for the Kaunertal power plant upgrade to the Provincial Government of the Tyrol and applied for an Environmental Impact Assessment.

The project was revised in compliance with the instructions to remedy the application, and the revised documentation was submitted to the authorities on 29 June 2015.

The project was modified in terms of water use in summer 2017 so that the projected Gurgler Ache power station can be operated without any restrictions. The revised project documentation was submitted to the authorities for examination on 7 December 2017.
